Fowlers in McCurtain Co

Am interested in the Fowlers of McCurtain County. My grandfather was David
A Fowler. He ran a General Store in Milerton. He was also a sherrif. My
great grandfather was Nathanial Mears Fowler. He was the founder of
Fowlerville. Also in the 1920 McCurtain Co census I find a Henerietta
Folwer listed with a Costello family. I am wondering if she could be the
widoow of Nathanial Fowler. I do appreciate all the help I can get. I
also am willing to share my Folwer information. Thank you very much. Davine

[OKMCCURT-L] LEWIS and BATCHELOR

Hello all!

I am new at this. My family was from Idabell, OK in McCurtain co, so
I am excited about getting your mail!

I am looking for two of my very hard lines to find. My grandfather,
John "Floyd" Batchelor and grandmother, Tiney Burns Batchelor died in
Idabell in the 60's and 70's. I am very interested in talking to anyone
with information about the family.

Second, and even harder to find is my Mom's Lewis family. Most of the
family is gone now. My Mom died the 2nd of this month. Her parents were:
"Jim" James Lee Lewis, and Eva Duncan Lewis. Jim's father was known only
as "Doc" Lewis. He had become a doctor in the Cival War, from AR I
think, but I am pretty sure he died around Bethel or Glover, somewhere
there. I also think he's buried in Wheelock cemetary, with no headstone.
I have been unable to find hardly anything on him, especially his first
name. Does anyone know about doctors in that county in early 1900???
Anything to help!!!!!! His wife was Martha Ann Adams, who died in AR I
think, possibly TX. I only have one Uncle left from this family, and he
can't help me. PLEASE!!! If you can help, contact me at this email
address dadhaml@dallas.net Thank you all so much! I look forward to
reading your queries. Peggy Batchelor Hamlett

[OKMCCURT-L] Isaac LEWIS

greatly appreciated!!! Thank you! Peggy dadhaml@dallas.net

[OKMCCURT-L] BURNS

I need help BAD!!!!! I thought I had figured out my family lines, but
you know how that goes!!!!!!! I need to ask if anyone has a census for
Fannin co, TX or later about 1900-10 for McCurtain co, OK please!!! I
have this much at least:

Sam BURNS (Sam might be a nickname) married to Hattie Dean/Burns lived
in Fannin co, TX in the 1880's. They had children Pete, Mollie, Rosie,
Tiney (my grandmother, but my aunt swore her real name was Clementine)
and possibly a daughter with name that sounded like Doanee. Later, when
Sam died after the Cival War, Hattie took papers to a lawyer who skipped
town with papers and a lot of people's money. Hattie never got the
widow's pension from Sam's service. Family tell me she died in McCurtain
co, OK. Iron Stobbs has been mentioned as a residence at one time.

Can anyone look these folks up for me???? PLEASE??????? Possibly you
could tell me who might do it for a fee??? I have no idea who might be
in this area and trustworthy. Thank you for listening and reading!!!!!!!

Re: [OKMCCURT-L] MY McCURTAIN COUNTY, OK FOLKS - Part Two

Hi Lou Ann,
You'd think with all the kin we have in McCurtain County, we would have
someone in common. The only one that looks familiar is Willie Bell. The
reason for that is that Maddie Willie Bell was my mother's name. She was
named after her step-brother's wife, Maddie Willie Bell Pittman. I have
found out quite a bit about my Sharp family lately, including a Lunsford
connection. Gwendolyn Franklin is my fourth cousin a Sharp descendant. She
married Hubert Lunsford who died in Vietnam in 1967. They had 3 children:
Deborah Ann, b 1953, Janet Lynn b 1954 and Billie Floyd b 1955. All three
were born in MS. He obviously was a career military man. I don't have his
birth date, but if he was the same age as Gwendolyn he was in his early
20's when the children were born. and in his late 30's when he was killed.

[OKMCCURT-L] School District #40, Shults, OK - 1916

I have a single page from a school census? taken in 1916. It has Children's
names, birthdays and guardians or parents. The following surnames are
mentioned.
Wilcox, McCllom (sic), Phillips, Nunn, Burkhalter, Nugent, Foley, Golden,
Mauldin, Coffman, McGowen, Green, Wood, Blackwood, & Raymer.

My gf and 5 children from his first marriage are on there. Of interest is a
C P Phillips that was the guardian of Willie Nunn and Leona Nunn. My gf had
an uncle Charles that was born in 1861. I don't have any info on him. The
Nunn family are long time friends with my Sharp and Phillips family from
Idabel. They all moved about the same time in the late 1930's from Idabel
to the Rush Springs OK area. I have a lot of pictures I got from my mother
of the Nunns.

[OKMCCURT-L] HANCOCKs in McCurtain Co

Greetings--

I am new to this list and would like to post a little about who I am
searching for.

My grandfather died in McCurtain Co (Smithville) on 30 sep 1949. His name
was James Monroe HANCOCK (b. 13 sep 1858, Amity, Clark, AR). Before this
date, his last known whereabouts was in Stroud, Lincoln, OK in 1905 when my
father was born. My grandmother may or may not have ever been in/around
McCurtain as she died in Stroud either in 1907 or 1927 (still working on
that).

When I was a boy (early 1970's), my family visited my Uncle Newton HANCOCK
in Smithville. I also am looking for any vital info, descendants, etc on
him. My memory is sketchy because of my age at the time, but I remember
that at the time, his wife (?? HANCOCK) was in a hospital or convalescent
home in Broken Bow.

Is there anyone out there who recognizes these names?? Do any of you
currently reside in either Smithville or Broken Bow or might have access to
say the 1940 census. James Monroe was buried in his home town of Amity (or
so I am told), but my Uncle Newt(on) and his wife are probably buried in
Smithville.

Any info or leads would be greatly appreciated. I live in CA and would be
glad to help anyone in any way I can.

[OKMCCURT-L] HANCOCK/MOWDY in Smithville

Thanks to the McCurtain Co., OK list (thank you Lou Ann), I have somemore
info to add and of course with that more questions to answer. My uncle
Newton(Newt) HANCOCK (b. 1899 in Stroud, Lincoln, OK) was in Smithville,
McCurtain Co., OK between 1914 and 1960's. He was married to ???MOWDY. He
may have been married in the county as his brother-in-law, "Mr. MOWDY", was
also in the area. My Uncle Newt was somewhat of a bootlegger (LouAnn, do I
have your permission to reprint your fathers story to the HANCOCK list??).
He and Mr. MOWDY would travel to Mena, Polk, Ar and Idabel, McCurtain, OK
together quite often--Since they travelled in my uncle's 1937 truck, I
assume this was after 1937. Mr. MOWDY was killed in an auto accident on one
of these trips.

Newt had at least one daughter (name & vitals unk). Would love to identify
her and his wife and any other children. Am very interested in hearing
anything about the area history, any other HANCOCKs that finds any of this
familiar, likewise with any MOWDY's. Does anyone know if there is a MOWDY
list?

Thanks for your time (thanks again to LouAnn)

[OKMCCURT-L] McCURTAIN CO., OK HISTORY

Hi group,

I will begin posting some history on the towns in McCurtain Co., OK as
time permits. These postings will be information from the "McCurtain
County, A Pictorial History" perpared by the McCurtain County Historical
Society's publication done in 1982. Please keep this first posting for
the address and reference information in case you need to obtain a copy
of this book for the pictures that are in it. It's wonderful and I will
be making notations of interest regarding the pictures and they may
pertain to your family and you would want to have a copy of this
publication.

I am not selling this book, only sharing information that you may need
for your research.

The address to write to see if copies are still available is:

McCurtain County Historical Society
Post Office Box 922
Idabel, Oklahoma 74745

If they do not have copies available, you may want to check in some of
the libraries in the towns that have one to see if they have any copies
to purchase. I paid $20.00 for mine at the Broken Bow Library in 1995.

The next posts you receive will have the towns noted in the subject
line. I'm anxious to get this going for ya'll because I think it could
really be an asset.

Enjoy,
See ya,
Lou Ann

[OKMCCURT-L] CHOCTAW HERITAGE - McCURTAIN CO., OK WAS THE CHOCTAW NATION

Page 1

Lest we forget, there should be reminders that the Choctaw Nation held
sovereignty over what is now McCurtain County and all southeaster
Oklahoma for three-quarters of a century as long as we have now been a
part of the State of Oklahoma.

The Choctaws created a viable, function republic here in 1834 after
producting the first consititution west of the Mississippi River.

In 1842 the Choctaws created a nation school system, another first amon
the Indian tribes. The Choctaw concern for education placed them ahead
of many of the American states in that regard.

Christian missionaries such as Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington had a
great impact on the history of this area during the pre-Civil War era.
Both were committed to educational as well as religious activities and
both established boarding schools for girsl, one at Wheelock and the
other at Eagletown. Evidence of their efforts is still to be seen in
physical structures such as the Wheelock Church and in the written
Choctaw language which Byington helped to create and preserve.

Encroachment by white settlers, invited and uninvited, led to the
downfall of the Choctaw republic. By the turn of the century there were
more whites than Indians in the Choctaw Nation. Law enforcement became
a tremendous problem because the Choctaw government had no jurisdiction
over many of these people.

The Choctaws had a totally different concept of the land than did their
white brothers. In their philosophy the land was an entity to which no
one individual could lay claim ownership. Each individual Choctaw used
the land he needed or could effectively use. Any improvements could be
owned and conveyed but not the land. Because of their attitude toward
land ownership, the Choctaws long resisted pressure from the Federal
Government to accept allotment of their lands to individual tribal
members. Being realists, the Choctaws finally bowed to the inevitable
and allowed an allotment program to proceed.

The importance of this area to the Choctaw Nation is signified by the
exceptional number of diplomats, jurists and executives who resided
here. Five of the sixteen Principal Chiefs of the Choctaws between 1860
and 1906 were residents of what is now McCurtain County. Others were
born here although living elsewhere when elected to the position of
chief.

The government experience of the Choctaws enabled many of them to take a
leading role in the formation of the Oklahoma State government in 1907.

Our Choctaw heritage is an important part of our past which deserves
preservation. These photographs are a contribution toward that end.

[OKMCCURT-L] AMERICA, OKLAHOMA - page 31

AMERICA, OKLAHOMA, page 31

Nothing remains of this once flourshing trade center which was located
on the Frisco Railroad, four miles from the Arkansas-Oklahoma boundary.

The town was founded in 1903 by William Spencer who had come to the
Indian Territory the previous year and settled at Goodwater, six miles
to the northwest. Realizing the advantage of being situated near the
railroad, Spencer moved to the new site. The town was named for
Americus Steward, wife of the first postmaster, Tom Stewart. The post
office began operating July 24, 1903.

Spencer built a sawmill to precess the lush stands of virgin timber
located near the new town site. He also built about 40 houses for rent
to employees of the mill. In addition he opened a general merchandise
store.

By 1910 the town had a population of about 200 people but the best
timber in the immediate vicinity had been harvested. The next year
Spencer closed the saw mill and soon thereafter built a cotton gin. He
encouraged the raising of cotton in the community and became a cotton
buyer. He also bought cross-ties which were then resold to the
railroads.

The Great Depression was the beginning of the end for America. There
was no longer profit in cotton farming and the gin closed in 1933. Most
of the residents had moved to other towns or other states. The post
office closed February 15, 1944. The town's founder had served as
postmaster from 1911 to 1936. His store remained in operation until
1945.
